Ace the OACP Test in 2026: How to Prepare and Pass
If you’re pursuing a career as a police officer or special constable in Ontario, the OACP Certificate is one of the first things you’ll need. Almost every police service in the province requires it before your application moves forward, from the OPP to Toronto Police to Peel Regional and beyond.
What the OACP Test Actually Covers
The OACP Certificate includes the Sigma Survey for Police Officers (SSPO), which is an online, timed assessment with 74 multiple-choice questions. You have 35 minutes to complete it.The SSPO Part B exam is divided into two sections:
Section A — Incident Report Writing Aptitude (44 questions). This section tests spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar. These skills matter because police officers write incident reports every day, and those reports end up in court. Recruiters want evidence that you can communicate clearly in writing.
Section B — Police Problem Solving (30 questions). Each question presents a realistic policing scenario with multiple-choice answers. You need to select the best response or course of action. This section trips up a lot of candidates because the answer choices can seem equally reasonable if you haven’t trained your judgment through practice.
Why Your Score Matters More Than You Think
There’s a common misconception that you just need to “pass” the OACP and then the real competition starts at the interview. That’s only partly true. Several Ontario services, including the OPP, look at your actual score, not just whether you cleared the minimum. A strong score gives you a real advantage. A marginal one can hold you back. The OACP doesn’t release individual test scores directly to candidates. Police services receive them as part of your application file and use them in their evaluation. That means you won’t know exactly how you did, which is all the more reason to prepare thoroughly and aim high.
How to Prepare: A Practical Timeline
Based on what I’ve seen work for candidates over the years, here’s the preparation approach I recommend:6 to 8 weeks before your test: Start with a practice test to see where you stand. Take note of which sections feel comfortable and which ones need work. Begin targeted practice on your weaker areas.
4 to 6 weeks before: Increase the volume. Take 2 to 3 practice tests per week, alternating between Section A and Section B. When you get something wrong, spend time understanding why. That’s more valuable than getting more questions right by volume alone.
2 weeks before: Switch to full-length timed practice tests. Simulate the 35-minute constraint so your brain and body know what test day feels like. Focus on pacing. If you’re spending too long on any single question, practice making your best choice and moving on.
The night before: Stop studying. Get a full night’s sleep. Showing up well-rested will help your performance more than last-minute cramming.
Common Mistakes That Cost Candidates
Running out of time on Section B. The problem-solving questions require careful reading, and some candidates spend too much time on a single difficult scenario. If you’re stuck, make your best guess and keep moving. You can come back to it if time allows.Skipping Section A preparation. Strong writers sometimes assume the language section will be easy. Then they encounter tricky punctuation questions or vocabulary they don’t use regularly. Don’t skip this section in your preparation.
Practicing without a timer. If you’ve never experienced the 35-minute constraint before test day, you’ll feel rushed. Timed practice tests are the single best way to build the pacing instinct you need.
Using outdated materials. There are multiple versions of the OACP test, and the format has evolved over time. Make sure whatever you’re practicing with reflects the current test structure.
