What is the Perfex test?
The Perfex test is a hands-on multitasking assessment used by some Canadian agencies to evaluate candidates for 911 dispatch and communications positions. Unlike computerized tests, the Perfex requires you to write all answers by hand on a paper answer sheet while operating a multitasking machine and following instructions from a continuous audio recording.
The test runs for approximately 45 minutes without stopping. Once the audio begins, there are no pauses, no replays, and no second chances to hear an instruction you missed.
What skills does the Perfex test?
The Perfex assesses the core skills dispatchers use every day:
- Map reading — locating streets and addresses quickly using a grid mapbook
- Memory recall — retaining details from audio instructions and reproducing them accurately
- Listening — following spoken directions while performing other tasks simultaneously
- Handwriting speed and accuracy — recording information legibly under time pressure
- Multitasking — managing multiple competing tasks at the same time without losing accuracy
- Responsiveness and dexterity — operating the multitasking machine while writing and listening
Why the Perfex is difficult
No single task on the Perfex is complicated on its own. The difficulty comes from doing all of them at the same time while a recording keeps moving forward. Candidates who haven't practiced often describe falling behind early and never catching up. The test is designed to push your multitasking limits because that is exactly what dispatch work demands.
The handwriting component adds another challenge. Most of us type everything now, so writing quickly and legibly by hand for 45 straight minutes requires physical stamina that needs to be built up through practice.
