About APCAT and ACT Testing
The Alberta Communication Test (ACT) is designed to test each applicant's ability to communicate in writing and covers three distinct areas of written communication: reading vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. The test takes roughly 1 hour and 35 minutes to finish and is based on a multiple-choice format.
The Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test (APCAT) is a written exam that takes about 3 hours to complete. This test consists of 120 multiple-choice questions that are based on job-related topics such as observation skills, problem analysis, memory recall, and judgement.
The Importance of Being Prepared
If you are not adequately prepared to take both of these tests, the likelihood of success will be quite a bit lower than if you take the necessary steps to learn the material. For the ACT exam, you need to get 55% to pass, and if you fail, there are minimum wait times in order to be able to take it again, which are one month after the first fail, six months after the second fail, and 12 months after the third.
The APCAT exam is even more demanding, with applicants needing 70% to pass. The wait times for APCAT are the same as the ACT for the first and second fails, but if you fail this test a third time, you are no longer eligible to take it and will be disqualified from being part of any municipal police force in Alberta.
